This publication is the catalogue for the exhibition, “BEUYS+PALERMO” organized by Toyota Municipal Museum of Art; The Museum of Modern Art, Saitama; The National Museum of Art, Osaka.
'Joseph Beuys and Blinky Palermo were teacher and pupil respectively at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf during the 1960s. Though at first glance polar-opposite personalities—Beuys expanding the concept of art and actively setting out to make an impact on society, Palermo producing a stream of abstract, understated works—both endeavored to return art to a raw, live endeavor. Woven through a core of major works by both artists from the 1960s and ’70s, plus essays on Beuys and Palermo by the exhibition curators and German scholars, this multilayered volume also contains a wealth of valuable archival material including numerous photographs documenting Actions and works in progress, plus full translation of documentation of Beuys discussing Palermo. As well as shedding new light on the “works” of Beuys and his theories surrounding sculpture, BEUYS + PALERMO serves as the first comprehensive Japanese examination of Palermo’s practice.'
