(Studio) Jonathan Hares
Published to coincide with Georg Baselitz’s major solo exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey (April – June 2024), this catalogue features the artist’s latest body of work that reviews the past six and half decades of his practice. Created from a process of revisitation and reinvention, Baselitz’s new paintings range from portraits of himself and his wife Elke to an array of different animals, citing the formative influence of painters including James McNeill Whistler, Pablo Picasso and Willem de Kooning.
With large-scale reproductions and full-bleed details, this publication, designed by (Studio) Jonathan Hares, provides an intimate survey of these nuanced paintings, in dialogue with reproductions of the artist’s works on paper. Interposed are a sequence of black-and-white illustrations that offer glimpses of the artist at work in his lake Ammersee studio. Linking past and present, an essay by art historian Martin Gayford unites the biographical details, art historical origins and current meditations that motivate these new works, providing a thoughtful account on Baselitz’s evolving artistic language.
